A Herniated Disc Doesn't Have To Mean Surgery.

BodyWorks provider evaluating a patient with a herniated disc

A herniated disc happens when the soft center of a spinal disc pushes through its tougher outer wall and presses on nearby nerves. At BodyWorks Medical Center, our medical providers, chiropractors, and rehabilitation specialists work together on one coordinated, non-surgical plan built to relieve nerve pressure, calm inflammation, and restore how your spine moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Herniated Disc Treatment: Your Questions Answered

What Patients Ask Before Booking Their First Disc Visit with Us.

What causes a herniated disc?
A disc can herniate from lifting with poor mechanics, a slip, fall or sudden twist, years of prolonged sitting and poor posture, or normal age-related disc degeneration. Often it's a combination - the disc gradually weakens, then one ordinary movement becomes the final straw. Part of your exam is identifying which of those factors apply to you, so the plan addresses the mechanics and not just the flare-up.
Can a herniated disc heal without surgery?
Many disc injuries respond well to conservative, non-surgical care. Spinal decompression creates space between the vertebrae, chiropractic care and manual therapy address how the segment moves, and rehab builds the core and hip strength that supports the spine long term. Treatment recommendations always depend on your diagnosis and individual condition, and we refer out when a surgical consult is genuinely warranted.
Do I need an MRI before I come in?
No. We start with a thorough history plus orthopedic and neurological testing, and order imaging only when it will change your plan. If you already have an MRI or x-ray, bring it - we'll review it with you. When advanced imaging is warranted, we coordinate it with local imaging centers so care isn't delayed.
How is a herniated disc different from sciatica?
Sciatica describes the symptom - pain traveling along the sciatic nerve - while a herniated disc is one of the possible causes. Sciatic symptoms can also come from spinal stenosis, joint irritation or deep hip muscle involvement. Our exam is designed to tell those apart, because the right treatment depends on what is actually compressing or irritating the nerve.
How long does recovery take?
Many patients notice meaningful improvement within the first few visits, usually starting with the sharp, radiating pain. Fuller recovery typically takes a series of visits to settle inflammation, restore mobility and rebuild strength so the disc isn't re-aggravated. Your timeline depends on the severity of the herniation, how long it's been going on and your daily demands - and we re-evaluate at set milestones rather than guessing.
Is herniated disc treatment covered by insurance?
Yes, our services are covered by most major PPO plans and Medicare. Our billing team verifies your specific plan up front - including deductible, copay and visit limits - and walks you through everything before treatment begins. Coverage and benefits vary by plan.
