How It Works

Evaluate, Then Rehabilitate, Then Progress

Rehabilitation is part of your treatment plan - not a separate track running on its own.

Step One

Evaluation

Your provider evaluates how you move - strength, mobility, stability and the activities that provoke your symptoms.

Step Two

Rehabilitation Built Into Your Plan

Rehabilitation is incorporated into your overall treatment plan alongside medical and chiropractic care, rather than treated as a separate program.

Step Three

Progress & Re-Evaluation

Exercises progress as you improve, with objective functional testing when appropriate and adjustments to the plan over time.

On-Site Rehabilitation

What Our Rehabilitation Services Include

Each element below is selected when it is appropriate for your individual condition and stage of recovery - always as part of your coordinated treatment plan.

Therapeutic Exercise

Guided, individualized exercise to address the specific limitations found on your evaluation.

Neuromuscular Re-Education

Exercises designed to improve coordination, movement control and proprioception based on the patient's functional deficits.

Functional Movement Training

Training the movements your day actually requires - lifting, bending, reaching, stairs and getting up and down.

Strengthening

Progressive strengthening of the muscles supporting the involved area as tolerance improves.

Mobility & Flexibility

Mobility and flexibility work for stiff joints and restricted soft tissue that limit normal motion.

Balance & Proprioceptive Training

Balance and proprioceptive training to improve stability and body awareness during movement.

Functional Activities

Activity-specific work related to your job, sport or daily routine, introduced when appropriate.

Home Exercise Education

A clear home program so the work continues between visits, with objective functional testing when appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rehabilitation: Your Questions Answered

What Patients Ask Before Starting Rehabilitation With Us.

Is this the same as physical therapy?
Our services are therapeutic rehabilitation provided within our integrated clinics - therapeutic exercise, neuromuscular re-education, functional movement training, strengthening, mobility work, balance and proprioceptive training, functional activities and home exercise education. We describe our department as rehabilitation rather than physical therapy, and we only describe a staff member as a physical therapist if that individual holds that license. If your plan calls for services outside what we provide, we'll tell you and coordinate a referral.
What does a rehabilitation visit look like?
Visits are active. You'll be guided through exercises selected for your evaluation findings, with hands-on cueing on form and progressions as your tolerance improves. Sessions are coordinated with your medical provider and chiropractor so everyone is working from the same plan, and you'll leave with a home program that reinforces what you did in the clinic. Rehabilitation services are provided as part of the patient's individualized treatment plan under the direction and supervision of the appropriate licensed healthcare provider.
How long does rehabilitation take?
It depends on your diagnosis, how long the problem has been present, and your goals. Some patients need a short course to restore mobility and confidence; others work through a longer progression after a significant injury or surgery. Your provider will outline an expected range at your report of findings and re-evaluate along the way rather than committing you to an open-ended schedule.
Will I get exercises to do at home?
Yes. Home exercise education is part of the plan. We keep the program specific and manageable, show you exactly how each movement should feel, and adjust it as you progress. Objective functional testing is used when appropriate so changes in strength, mobility and function are measured rather than guessed at.
Do I need a referral for rehabilitation?
Many patients can begin care without a referral. Referral and authorization requirements can vary by service and insurance plan, so our team will verify any applicable requirements before care begins. You can book directly at any of our Carol Stream, St. Charles or West Dundee clinics, and our medical providers and chiropractors are on site to evaluate you. If you'd like your primary care physician kept in the loop, we're happy to send progress notes and findings.
Is rehabilitation covered by insurance?
Coverage for rehabilitation services varies by insurance plan, service, diagnosis and applicable coverage requirements. BodyWorks accepts many major PPO plans and Medicare, and our team will verify your available benefits before care begins.
