Frequently Asked Questions

Shoulder Pain Treatment: Your Questions Answered

What Patients Ask Before Booking Their First Shoulder Visit with Us.

Can you help if I have a rotator cuff tear?
Often, yes. Many rotator cuff issues, including partial tears, respond well to a combination of manual therapy and targeted rehab. We refer out for surgical consults when imaging and exam findings show it's the right step. Not every rotator cuff tear needs surgery. Many partial-thickness tears respond well to a combination of manual therapy, targeted strengthening and load management - we're honest about when a surgical opinion truly is the right next step.
Do I need an MRI before I come in?
No. We start with a full exam and only order imaging when it will change your plan. If you already have imaging, bring it along. Ordering imaging you don't need is expensive and rarely changes the plan. When advanced imaging is warranted, we coordinate it with local imaging centers and typically have results reviewed within a day or two, so care isn't delayed.
Will I be adjusted on visit one?
Possibly. After the exam we'll explain what's appropriate. Gentle, low-force and rehab-only options are available if adjustments aren't right for you. If manual adjusting isn't right for you, we can rely entirely on rehab, soft-tissue work and instrument-assisted techniques. Your comfort dictates the plan.
How long until I can use my arm normally?
Most patients see meaningful gains in range and pain within the first few visits. A clear timeline and endpoint are part of your report of findings. Range of motion typically comes back first, followed by strength. Your plan is re-evaluated at set milestones so improvement is measured, not guessed.
Do I need a referral?
Many patients can begin care without a referral. Referral and authorization requirements can vary by service and insurance plan, so our team will verify any applicable requirements before care begins. Book directly with any of our Carol Stream, St. Charles or West Dundee clinics. Illinois is a direct-access state, so you can start care with us the same week without waiting on paperwork from another provider. If you'd like your primary care doctor kept in the loop, we're happy to send updates on your progress.
Is shoulder treatment covered by insurance?
Yes, our services are covered by most major PPO plans and Medicare. We verify your benefits before your first visit. Our billing team verifies your plan up front - including deductible, copay and any visit limits - and walks you through everything before your first treatment.
