Spinal decompression uses controlled traction to reduce pressure inside the disc space - a non-surgical option for herniated and bulging discs, sciatica and chronic low back pain. At BodyWorks, we confirm it's the right fit at your initial evaluation, and chiropractic and rehabilitation care work alongside it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Spinal Decompression: Your Questions Answered

What Patients Ask Before Starting a Decompression Program with Us.

Is spinal decompression safe?
Yes. It's a non-surgical, FDA-cleared therapy with a strong safety record. Because we have medical providers on staff, anything outside the scope of decompression is identified up front. Sessions are supervised by our clinical team, and every patient is screened during their initial exam to confirm they're a good fit before decompression is ever started.
Does decompression hurt?
No. Most patients describe sessions as gentle and relaxing - you lie comfortably on a table while the system applies precise, controlled traction to the targeted area. Most patients read, listen to music or even doze off during sessions. The traction is gradual, targeted and set at a level appropriate for your case - never forced or aggressive.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients follow a structured plan over several weeks. After your evaluation you'll get a clear recommendation with a defined endpoint, not an open-ended package. Disc-related pain typically responds to a structured plan of decompression paired with rehab. You'll be re-evaluated at set milestones, and once you've hit your goals we transition you off active care - no open-ended packages.
Will it work for a herniated or bulging disc?
Decompression is specifically designed for disc-related pain, including herniations, bulges and degenerative discs. We confirm it's the right fit during your initial evaluation. Decompression is intended to reduce pressure within the disc space and support nutrient flow to the disc itself. That's why it's often recommended for disc-related pain.
Do I need an MRI before starting?
Not always. If you don't have recent imaging, our team will decide whether it's needed based on your exam and history. If we do need imaging to confirm a decompression candidate, we can coordinate it locally and typically have results back quickly, so care isn't delayed.
Is decompression covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by plan. We verify your benefits up front and walk you through your options before any therapy begins. Some plans cover decompression under physical medicine benefits, some don't. Our billing team runs your specific plan first, and if it isn't covered we'll walk you through affordable self-pay options before anything starts.
